How to Travel with Yarra Trams
To travel on trams in downtown Melbourne's Free Tram Zone you do not need any ticket - just hop on and hop off. See our
with credit on it. You can purchase Myki cards from any Melbourne railway station, from Myki vending machines at railway stations, major downtown tram stops and Melbourne Airport. You can also purchase Myki cards at 7-eleven stores across Melbourne's suburbs. You CANNOT purchase myki cards or add credit to a myki card on board trams, so if you are travelling outside the Free Tram Zone you must ensure you have a valid myki before boarding.
When you board your tram outside the Free Tram Zone you MUST validate your myki card by 'touching on' by holding it near the lime green coloured myki validators on the tram. The validator will beep to confirm your trip is paid and valid. You do NOT need to 'touch off' - simply disembark the tram when you reach your destination. If you do 'touch off' that is OK, you will not be charged any more. Tram fares are charged at a flat rate no matter where you travel beyond the Free Tram Zone, however, if your journey is entirely within Zone 2 only, a lower fare will be charged if you touch off - this is the only time it is necessary to 'touch off', and this applies only at the outer eastern ends of tram routes 75, 86 and 109.
Trams will stop at all stops to allow passengers to board or alight, but they might run straight through without stopping if nobody wants to get on or off. To ensure the tram stops for you make sure you are at the stop before it arrives, and to get off, press the button to alert the driver you want the next stop.
Whilst vehicle drivers are required to give way to passengers getting on and off trams, please take care and watch out for drivers who, unfortunately, sometimes ignore this road rule.
