NOTES:
Australian Rail Maps regularly uploads GTFS Static timetable data from 38 publically available GTFS data feeds covering almost all public transport across Australia. Whilst this covers 95%+ of public transport,
Australian Rail Maps maintains data for the handful of rail operators for which no public GTFS data is published, so all (non-heritage) trains in Australia are included on this page.
Some minor anomalies in daily counts occur when trains travel for multiple days - these are counted only on the day of their departure. This evens out when trains run daily but will be under-counted when they run less than daily. There are only a very small number of trips that fall into this category.
Some rail agencies do inaccurately classify their scheduled rail replacement buses as trains - so counts of trains may be overstated a little and buses understated when replacement services are scheduled. (Looking at you Metro Trains Melbourne and TransPerth.)
On rare occasions, counts may be under-stated when one or more GTFS data feed update is delayed, or if you view this page during a periodic database reload. Check again in a few minutes to confirm figures are stable.
Some transport operators may appear more than once when the GTFS data feeds publishes the data under separate operator IDs with the same name. In Queensland and Tasmania the GTFS data is made available in separate feeds for different geographic regions, so the same operator appears separately from each feed. In other States, even though the data is centralised, this can happen when smaller bus companies have been purchased by a larger operator and separate operations now appear under the same operator name, or where one operator's depots are reported separately.
School bus trips data is published only for ACT and NSW and these figures are not added into the 'All Public Transport' number. Some school bus trips in metropolitan Adelaide are published, but they are often mis-categorised as regular buses and are not easily distinguishable from regular route buses, so these DO appear in the grand totals.
Whilst some trips in each of the following categories may be found here, our database does not cover all the following:
- Heritage train and tram services
- Privately operated Interstate bus routes
- Privately operated long distance bus routes in NSW, Qld, SA and WA.
- Privately operated Airport bus routes (except Skybus in Melbourne which IS included)
- Privately operated Ferry services (though Spirit of Tasmania IS included)
You can drill in to any dataset by clicking on any box. If you click on a Transport Mode box you will bring up a box listing all the public transport agencies who operate those modes. Click on any agency and you will get a list of their routes. Clock on any route and you will get a list of all the trips that are scehduled to run today. Finally, click on any trip and you will be shown the detailed stop by stop timetable for that trip.
This page is intended merely for browsing the datasets, and it is not designed for travel planning. To plan a trip by public transport, we have three travel planning tools easily accessible from the Australian Rail Maps Home Page.
