Today's historic photo of the day: 37 years ago today, Alco diesel loco 4814 and a works train sits on the main line next to the distant signal on the down side of Wingello, NSW, April 1 1987. Wingello is in the NSW Southern Highlands, 177km by rail from Sydney on the Main South line. The passenger station is served by local passenger trains to and from Goulburn, but longer distance passenger trains between Sydney and Canberra, Griffith and Melbourne run through express. Note the trackworkers standing in the open wagons - possibly unloading materials - maybe track clips, baseplates or maybe sleepers. Note also loco 4814 is, unusually, not fitted with a buffing plate that was standard on NSW diesel locomotives. PS Whilst I am confident of the date on this photo, my records have this as Penrose. However, based on the track curve and the km post, I believe it was in fact taken at Wingello. Can anyone confirm this?
